ABOUT PHILM
PHILM is an extreme musical playground with no borders. Formed by legendary drummer Dave Lombardo alongside guitarist and vocalist Gerry Nestler and bassist Francisco “Pancho” Tomaselli, the trio exists outside genre restriction, drawing power from hard rock, extreme metal, underground expressionism and raw street-level intensity. Heavy but sensitive, powerful yet atmospheric, PHILM thrive on contrast, tension and freedom of movement.
Best known for redefining heavy music as the rhythmic engine of Slayer, Lombardo has consistently pushed beyond any single stylistic lane, collaborating with artists including Mike Patton, John Zorn and The Melvins. With PHILM, his demanding, innovative drumming becomes the foundation for music that lives on the heavy side but freely drifts into haunting, desolate and ambient territory. Nestler’s vocals shift effortlessly between imploring whispers, clean melodies and near-manic screams, while Tomaselli’s bass work anchors the band’s dynamic range with authority and feel.
That boundary-free philosophy is fully realised on Fire From The Evening Sun (2014), an album rooted in heavy music but branching into darker, more exploratory spaces. From impulsive openers to drum ’n’ bass-influenced passages and sinister, atmospheric closers, the record captures PHILM at their most immersive and unpredictable - a band unconcerned with rules, driven instead by mood, texture and instinct.
